Thanks to All Who Give

On the threshold of United Way’s Campaign 2013, I want to share profound gratitude to all who recognize themselves in the following poem:

“Have You Ever?” (author unknown)

Have you ever in a single day

Found a child a place to play?

Or helped a woman find a house

When she’s been battered by her spouse?

Or helped an elder manage strife

And given him back a better life?

Or cooked a meal for homeless men

And found them blankets, beds, and then…

Bought a girl a teddy bear

And smoothed the tangles from her hair?

Have you ever in a single day

Done so much?  Well, by the way…

You’ve done all that when you say,

“I donated through United Way!”

Whenever I walk into H-E-B or Walmart wearing my United Way nametag, I am acutely aware that many of the workers I see there have donated to United Way.  Even better, I know that Walmart matches every employee’s donation dollar for dollar.  H-E-B also sends a sizeable check on top of their employee donations.

Other national companies have their local employees donate electronically.  These include the folks at AT&T, BBVA Compass, FedEx, GE, JC Penney, Kimberly Clark, Payless Shoe Source, Pepsico, Silver Eagle Distributors, and UPS.  Many of these companies match their employee donations as well.

Many local organizations work with cash and pledge cards.  The Campaign 2012 Numero Uno Award Winner was Val Verde Regional Medical Center.  However, I know that the School District is gunning for that award this year.  Hot on their heels will be Bendix CVS and The Bank & Trust.

The United Way Board is so proud of the City, the County, and the Housing Authority for stepping up to encourage payroll deductions to our 18 local agencies.  We have reached out to the local auto dealerships – Brown Automotive Center, Del Rio Ford, and Ram Country – and the banks – IBC, Amistad Bank, and Texas Community Bank.  Then there are the federal workers who donate through the Combined Federal Campaign and choose to designate our United Way’s federation for their contributions.  Thanks to all of you!

If your place of business was not listed above – oops, forgot DelTex RV and Grace Community Church – then join the rest of the Pacesetters at their Kickoff at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, August 29 at the Texas Community Bank.  There’s always room for another Pacesetter or two or more.
